Ikigai: How to Find Your Reason for Being

  • What do you love? (Passion)
  • What are you good at? (Vocation)
  • What does the world need? (Mission)
  • What can you be paid for? (Profession)

Why Ikigai Matters for Longevity

A 7-year study of over 43,000 Japanese adults found that those with a strong sense of ikigai had significantly lower rates of cardiovascular disease and were far less likely to die during the study period. Purpose isn’t just motivating — it’s biologically protective.

How to Find Your Ikigai

Step 1: Make Four Lists

Take 20 minutes and brainstorm freely in each category. Don’t filter — just list everything that comes to mind.

  • Things I love doing (even without pay)
  • Things I’m naturally good at or have developed skill in
  • Problems I see in the world I care about solving
  • Things people would pay me for

Step 2: Look for the Overlaps

Where do your lists intersect? That’s where ikigai lives. You may not find perfect overlap immediately — that’s normal. The search itself is part of the process.

Step 3: Start Small, Not Grand

Western culture often turns ikigai into a dramatic “life purpose revelation.” In Japan, ikigai is quieter — it can be as small as tending a garden, teaching a child, or perfecting a craft. Don’t wait for a lightning bolt. Start with what feels alive.

What If You Haven’t Found It Yet?

Ikigai isn’t found — it’s cultivated. Try more things. Pay attention to when you lose track of time. Notice what problems make you angry enough to want to fix them. Follow curiosity, not passion. Passion follows mastery.

Your ikigai may look nothing like anyone else’s. That’s the whole point.
